While on vacation in September, my husband and I stopped in Rock Springs, Wyoming to take a stretch break. I was taking pictures of a very old building, and a lady approached me asking if I was associated with United Way because of my Day of Caring T-shirt.
She introduced herself as Kelly, a United Way employee. They had just moved two doors down from the building I was photographing, and invited us in to meet the rest of the staff. I met Shelly, Alex, and their intern Rachel. They were very welcoming, and even shared a T-shirt with me!
We discussed the differences between the two United Ways, one of which I found particularly striking. For their campaign, staff members have to drive almost two hours to local mines at 4 a.m. to do their presentations before the miners go to work.
This got me thinking about how much I take my ten-minute commutes for granted, and how much more time and effort they must undertake to ensure the success of their campaign. I feel honored to have met them, and they will always be an inspiration to me.
