I’ve Been Everywhere Man…

This morning, we arrived to a Veteran who needed help with his phone. He’d arrived quite early. We all had a nice visit with him. He just needed minutes added to his phone and his case worker told him to come. It’s not how we usually help folks but while visiting with him, he told me about growing up in Ohio in the town where Shawshank Prison is. Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies. He told me about all the Interstate highways that run through Ohio and used his forearm to show me where they were. Did you know Ohio has 21 Interstates running through it and it’s one of his pride points. As he rattled off, I-70, I-71, I-75, I-77 and more, I could only remember growing up in Arizona with I-10 and now living in Oregon, I-5.

I could also hear Johnny Cash singing in my head, “I’ve been everywhere man.”

I’ve been everywhere, man
I’ve been everywhere, man
Crossed the desert’s bare, man
I’ve breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I’ve had my share, man
I’ve been everywhere.

He’s served our country and he’s wandered a lot of territory. He fought wildfires in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon. And I’m glad he came here for a little help. It’s the least we could do. For those of you who know the movie, the ending is so worth it! And for those of you who know the song and are singing in your head, you’re welcome.

To Lamar, thank you for coming by this morning and being such a kind man. I’m grateful you made my day.

Onward…
